Description

For a $500 donation to Pangolin Conservation, you receive this awesome “Thank You” gift of an antique brass pangolin, called a “Mrammuo”, traditionally used by the Ashanti people of Ghana, West Africa as a counterbalance to measure the weight of gold. The use of these were abandoned after the early 1900’s. The age of this piece is unknown and is about 3.75″ in length.

These are all made to be the same weight, with the ends of their tails ground down to different lengths to make the weights consistent. These MIGHT have been made for the tourist trade in the early 1900’s or used to represent “folk stories” by the gold traders. Most authentic gold weights smooth, but tourist items are l usually larger and not consistently the same weight. It’s clear the tails were filed down to make the weight consistent, as is done for authentic pieces, so…. Sort of wish they still made them.
